Camellia Japonica

Camellia Japonica

Camellias originate from China, Korea and Japan, and are a great garden stalwart. Flowering from late summer through autumn, winter, and spring (depending on species), and complemented by their rich glossy green foliage, they are a great addition to any garden - cottage, formal or modern. Hedging, espalier and topiary are also an option. Camellias have shallow feeding roots and need soils with good drainage, high in organic matter, a pH of 5- 6.5 (slightly acid) and do not tolerate lime. Beware of planting them in west sun or early morning sun, as blooms will discolour. The lime in new masonry also can affect them. Plant in a moist well-drained soil (don't bury their roots too deep), in the right aspect for each species and apply good quality organic mulch. Camellias have proven to be fairly drought tolerant when planted in the right conditions.
