Strelitzia |
Strelitzia or Bird of Paradise - a genus of five evergreen soft wooded perennials species native to South Africa. The leaves arise from a clumping rhizome and the flowers are held above the leaves from Spring through to Autumn which is handy for the nectar feeding birds in the Winter months. The Strelitzia flower head is quite complex offering (usually) two lots of blue flowers with either orange or white sepals (depending on species). Strelitzia enjoys a full sun position on a moist well-drained sandy loam soil. Not frost tolerant, but West sun, drought, pollution, chlorine and neglect tolerant once established. |
