Doryanthes |
The Doryanthes genus consists of two species, D. excelsa and D. palmeri, both native to the coast of Eastern Australia. Known as Gymea lilies, Doryanthesare a large clumping soft wooded perennial with bright green sword-like leaves 1 m in length and up to 100 mm wide. When the plant eventually flowers (often takes 10 years) the spectacular cluster of red flowers are borne on a tall stem 2-4 m high. So they are best viewed from a verandah above the plant. Doryanthes prefer a warm microclimate, in full sun to filtered shade, good deep soil (for anchor roots), and much water during the warmest time of the year. |
