Cordyline

Cordyline

Many of the colourful Cordyline come from Hawaii, but the Cordyline genus is native to South America, New Zealand, parts of Asia, New Guinea, some Pacific islands, and eight species are native to Australia. The Australian species are mostly green. Cordyline have a large range of leaf shapes and sizes, from compact to long and strappy, and soft to firm and spiky textures.Whilst Cordylines grow in the tropics, they are definitely not tender. Known to be as 'tough as old boots”, growing happily in the tropics and sub-tropics down to NSW, provided they are protected from direct frosts. The cold loving New Zealand species, (C. australis) will grow in the cooler parts of Australia. Most prefer good light with protection from the direct sun, planting under the canopy of palms or trees works well. Water well to establish but will tolerate occasional dry spells better than most plants.
