Metrosideros

Metrosideros

Metrosideros are mostly a Pacific genus with one renegade in South Africa. Metrosideros - Metra = heartwood and sideros = iron is a hardy evergreen, often with a silvery hairy underside to the deep green leaves. Rich stamenous crimson flowers in summer(although cultivars exist now with orange, lemon yellow and white flowers). Slow to establish, but hardy to frost, seaside conditions, wind, poor sandy soils and mild drought, they are an appealing option for the seaside. Pohutukawa trees (M.excelsa) in New Zealand are renown for their large twisted canopies growing right down to the ocean on rocky shores. But with multiple leaders and constant tip pruning young plants can be hedged very effectively for difficult seaside conditions. Metrosideros are a good option for street, shade and colour contrast trees, screen/hedge/seaside plantings and a known bird attractor.
