Encephalartos |
Encephalartos are without a doubt, some of the most beautiful and interesting of the African Cycads. E. ferox particularly with it's red seed cone and incised leaflets are strikingly attractive while E. kisambo has a canary yellow seed cone. Several species of Encephalartos are commonly referred to as bread palms, bread tree or Kaffir bread since a bread-like starchy food can be prepared from the central pith of the stem after soaking or burying for two months. Care must be taken with the seeds of most Cycads as they have toxic qualities. All the species of Encephalartos are endangered. They are, in evolutionary terms, some of the most primitive living plants and we are pleased to offer a lovely selection from Josef Perner's Cycad International. |
