Washingtonia

Washingtonia

Washingtonia is a genus of only two species -W. filifera and W. robusta, native to the USA and down to Mexico. Washingtonia grow fairly quickly and W. robusta is by far one of the tallest palms in cultivation, easily growing to 20m. The Washingtonia genus grows in a similar climate range to the Phoenix genus, as they too can handle some extreme conditions once established; from first line salt, to short periods of drought. The Washingtonia genus when young holds its leaves, but once pruned or leaf drop occurs naturally, it reveals an attractive, symmetrical criss cross pattern up the trunk. The Washingtonia like the Phoenix genus are regularly planted in many parks and gardens as a formal statement because both are magnificent stately looking palms as they age.
