Butia

Butia

Butia is a genus of 20 species, native to South America and is found in large numbers in the wild. The species all produce fruit and Butia capitata - Jelly Palm produces an extraordinary looking and tasting orange (edible) fruit. Butia species range from 0.5m up to 10m, are fairly slow growing, and easily identifiable by their beautiful feather grey pinnate leaves that arch inwards towards a thick stout trunk. Butia capitata is a very hardy palm species which can tolerate; extreme weather variations, from reasonably warm temperatures, to the cool climate cold of -10c, copes with exposed sites with varying soil types from heavy clays to sandy soils. Butia capitata is thought to be the most commonly grown of the genus in Australia, and is commonly found in the heritage gardens of Sydney. Unfortunately Butia are susceptible to Fusarium wilt and fungal diseases.
