Beaucarnea

Beaucarnea

The Beaucarnea genus is native to Mexico and Central America, with Beaucarnea recuvata being the most commonly cultivated of the genus in Australia. Beaucarnea are well known as the Pony Tail Palm or Elephants Foot for the water storing properties of the large bulbous base of the plant. The very attractive green strappy leaves and rough grey bark that widens out at the base add to the attractive shape of the tree. Beaucarnea can handle a climate range from warm temperate through to mild frosts. Although they are slow growing, they look great as a specimen planting in large garden beds, in parks, and in Mediterranean style gardens. Once established in a protected area Beaucarnea produce large clusters of bright creamy yellow flowers. Please note: It is wise not to plant Beaucarnea in pots, tubs or planters as the roots and water storing base can damage walls and surrounding structures.
