Syzygium

Syzygium

Syzygium - is a huge genus (+1100 species), native to Africa, Southern Asia Australia and throughout the Pacific, comprising evergreen trees and shrubs. Sixty-two species are found in Australia and they are generally known as Lillypillies, Brush Cherries or Satinash. Syzygium has lustrous green foliage and the new growth can be flushed with pink to cherry red and is a particularly attractive feature. The flowers are the usual Myrtaceae polystemonous style, with S. luehmanni x S. wilsonii 'Cascade' having a lovely powder puff pink cluster almost like a smaller version of the pink Corymbia. The fruits tend to be a fleshy berry shapes and attracts seed eating birds and bats. Not frost tolerant but enjoys a sunny (not west sun) to filtered shade position in a moist well-drained range of soils. A great genus for screen/hedge plantings when regularly tip pruned. Small shrub species are great topiary and tub specimens.
