Sequoia

Sequoia

Sequoia is a genus of redwood conifers, a sub family of the of the Cupressaceae family. The only living species of the genus is the Sequoia sempervirens - Coast Redwood from the Northern California and Southern Oregon eco region. It is an evergreen, long-lived species (1200-1800 years or more) and includes the tallest trees on Earth, reaching up to 115.5 m in height (without the roots) and up to 7.9 m in diameter at breast height. Sequoias usually grow in the mountains where drizzle from the incoming moisture off the ocean is greater. The tallest and oldest trees are found in deep valleys and gullies, where year-round streams can flow, and fog drip is regular. The trees above the fog layer, above about 700 metres are shorter and smaller due to the drier, windier, and colder conditions.
