Olea

Olea

Olea europea is a species of small tree in the family Oleaceae, native to the coastal areas of the eastern Mediterranean Basin. Olea europaea, the fruiting olive - has many different cultivars resulting in different tasting olives. The olive fruit is of major agricultural importance in the Mediterranean region as the source of oil, food, fine timber and medicine. Olive trees, to fruit, need a sunny aspect (even west sun), dry summers, cold winters, and will grow in most soil types if there is excellent drainage and a deep water table. Usually trained to a single leader with the lower branches and suckers pruned off, but can be trained into hedging by encouraging this growth instead. A good hardy tree, with attractive silvery/glaucous or shiny green leaves, that make for a reliable shade, topiary, tub/planter, espalier, screen/hedging option as well as domestic and agricultural fruit harvest.
