Alnus |
Alnus or Alder is a fast growing family of trees, found naturally along watercourses. Alnus jorullensis is unusual because it is an evergreen tree in the largely deciduous Birch family. It makes a great nurse plant because the roots develop nodules that capture nitrogen, which in turn helps other plants establish.
Uses include: screening, background or large informal hedging tree, shade tree, bank binder. Alnus are a good tree to dry out a boggy corner in the garden. Be aware the root system is vigorous and avoid planting near older style terracotta drains without root barrier. |
