Melia

Melia

The Melia genus is native to India, Pakistan Indochina, Southeast Asia and Australia, with Melia azedarach or White Cedar the most commonly grown here. It is an attractive deciduous medium sized tree, valued for its hardiness, foliage, flowers, fruit (for medicines), fire retardant properties, and timber. But as in life there is a catch; the fruit is attractive, but toxic to children and small animals, and the root system is vigorous and can damage unprotected drains, paths and structures, while a plague of white cedar moth caterpillars can defoliate trees in late Summer almost overnight. But knowledge is power, and the advantages in some circumstances can outweigh the limitations, because it is a lovely tree and worthy of consideration for its tolerance of west sun, a wide range of soils: even periodically wet, alkaline or saline soils, pollution, neglect and some seasonal drought. But obviously optimum conditions make better trees.
