Taxodium |
Taxodium is a genus of flood tolerant evergreen and deciduous conifers from the Cuppressaceae family native to the southern half of the North American continent. Taxodium distichum- Swamp or Bald Cypress prefers deep moist acidic soils and can tolerate periodically wet or waterlogged soils. In wet conditions Taxodium will produce 'Cypress knees' - 300-600mm growths upwards from the roots to help anchor and stabilise the tree. Some books attribute the growths to also be pneumatophores, breathing roots. An ideal tree for a boggy position, in or near a watercourse, needing a sunny position protected from strong winds. Taxodium have soft pale green leaflets that turn a rich coppery autumn colour and are an attractive tree for a difficult swampy situation. |
