Cedrus

Cedrus

Cedrus is a magnificent genus of trees that grow up to 40-45 m tall and 15m wide. Cedrus are found throughout North Africa, the Middle East and up into the Himalayas. These amazing cold climate trees can handle extreme cold, frost and even heavy snow. It is inadvisable to attempt to grow Cedrus in warm or tropical climates as the genus is suited to low humidity and mild temperatures. Cedrus like most conifers prefer moist but free draining soils. Cedrus are amazing and beautiful trees and can live for thousands of years; records show that some Cedrus libani have been recorded to be over 2000 years old and still growing. In Australia the most commonly cultivated Cedrus are C. deodar and C. atlantica, both are very attractive trees with similar growth habits, but Cedrus deodar grows much faster. More appropriate for large parks and gardens, they are an amazing and beautiful group of trees that can go on growing for thousands of years in the right conditions!
