Agathis

Agathis

Agathisor Kauri are a remnant from the Jurassic era, and are from the Araucariaceae family being majestic tall timber trees. A. robusta(Queensland Kauri) is an attractive evergreen tree suitable for parks and avenues. It has tough shiny leaves without a midrib, the female seed cones are globose and the male cones are cylindrical. The bark is smooth and light grey to grey-brown, flaking in an attractive camouflage pattern. Like other podocarps, Agathis have feeder roots close to the surface housing symbiotic mycorrhiza fungi. This association, and the leaf litter being very acidic, helps Agathis outcompete other species living around it.
