Ficus

Ficus

Ficus is a large genus from the Moraceae family with a variety of forms including climbers, shrubs and enormous trees suitable only for parkland. Evergreen in NSW region, several are native to the east coast of Australia. Some Ficus species respond well to pruning into topiary forms and make attractive pot specimens. The magnificent parkland Ficus tend to be broad canopied, and the attractive smooth grey trunks often buttressed, with some species having aerial roots in humid environments. Most Ficus have small fruit that attract birds and bats. The big parkland trees need reliable rainfall as they are too large to irrigate in drought. With their vigorous roots systems, they should not be planted near drains and structures. Hardy once established, most species tolerate pollution but not frost.
