Dicksonia

Dicksonia

Dicksonia with its dark green fronds is an earlier, more primitive version of tree fern than the Cyathea genus. Dicksonia is the most plentiful tree fern in South Eastern Australia and naturally occurring in the damp, sheltered woodland slopes and moist gullies of warm to cool temperate rainforest habitat. Occasionally Dicksonia occurs at high altitudes in cloud forests. While Cyathea forms a woody trunk, the stem of the Dicksonia fern is the decaying remains of earlier plant growth and forms a pithy core through which the roots grow. The trunk is usually singular, but may produce offsets. Dicksonia can be cut down and, if they are kept moist, the top portions can be replanted and will form new roots. The stump, however, will not regenerate. Dicksonia can grow in a range ofsoils and in semi-shade, but does not tolerate drought or dryness at the roots.
