Robinia

Robinia

Robinia - Locust Tree - Native to North America, but now quite common worldwide. The flowers and seedpods are the usual Faboideae pea shape, the leaves are deciduous and vary in colour from lime green, mid green to purple plum colours depending on the culitivar. Flowers range in colour from white to bright pink. The species will survive in a broad range of temperatures and soils but will not tolerate saturated soils and wind. Many cultivars are grafted onto species root stock so care must be taken to not disturb the shallow root system otherwise suckers will appear with the thorny spines of the species. Enjoys a sunny position, tolerates pollution, moderate drought and frosts once established, but must be protected from winds.
