Pistacia

Pistacia

Pistacia or Pistachio - In this case P. chinensis, a lovely small to medium sized deciduous tree grown predominantly for its graceful fern-like leaves with 10 or so pairs of leaflets and creamy brown to pale grey bark. The Pistachio nut comes from P. vera a Mediterranean species. Autumn colour can be impressive with shades of yellow orange or crimson. Tough enough for use in difficult areas in streetscapes, park, avenue, gardens and urban plantings. Pistacia prefers a moist, fertile, well-drained soil and will grow in full sun or part shade andis a good deciduous tree for warmer climates and transplants very well from containers and ex ground. Warning: the leaves look a little like the highly toxic Rhus tree Toxicodendron succedaneum so ascertain which tree you are looking at before touching.
