Michelia

Michelia

Michelia are in the same family as Magnolia, but the blossoms of Michelia generally form clusters among the leaves, rather than singly at the branch ends as Magnolia does. Michelia are native to tropical and subtropical Southeast Asia and are a genus of evergreen trees and shrubs. Several of the larger species are important sources of timber in Asia. Some species, including the Champak (Michelia champaca) and M. doltsopa are grown for their fragrant flowers (noticeable particularly in the evening), and Champak flowers produce an essential oil used in perfume. Like Magnolias, Michelia's surface roots need a moist fertile well-drained slightly acid pH soil, thickly mulched, and a sunny sheltered position protected from West sun, winds, salt, frost and cold. Most Michelia's make good screen/hedge plantings, fragrant garden and topiary specimens.
