Gleditsia

Gleditsia

Gleditsia or Honey Locust is a genus of deciduous trees that produce a seedpod filled with a white pulp that explains the common name. It's best to buy the cultivars as the genus has long sharp three pointed spines. Select trees with a strong central leader and an open branching habit as good early training is essential. The Gleditsia cultivars range in colour from lime to dark green leaves with others having bronze or yellow first flushes aging to green, turning bronze or yellow in Autumn. A reliable and hardy tree, best grown a sunny position with moderate drainage, and protected from wind. Avoid digging around the tree as any damaged roots will sucker strongly with the thorny spines of the species.
