Ginkgo

Ginkgo

Ginkgo biloba or Maidenhair Tree is the sole member of this genus, a relic of the earliest tree species from the Jurassic Period. Often called a deciduous conifer it is actually an older remnant from an earlier incarnation. Now extinct in the wild, it has been cultivated around Chinese monasteries for centuries. The beautiful undulating fan shaped leaves emerge in Spring in the most wonderful lime green, age to a mid green in Summer, and then in Autumn turn a sumptuous daffodil yellow. A wonderful shade, street, autumn colour and foliage contrast tree needing a sunny position protected from harsh winds in a cool temperate climate. Ginkgo biloba is frost and pollution tolerant, but not drought tolerant. Make sure to buy one of the male cultivars as the flesh of the female fruit has a vomitus smell. And if making an avenue planting obtain grafted clones.
