Calodendrum |
Calodendron or Cape Chestnut is a beautiful (usually pink) flowering tree from South Africa, mostly evergreen, but can be (semi) deciduous in areas with light frost. When grown in a warm sheltered position protected from winds, the tree is a picture in late Spring/mid summer when in flower. Calodendron make great shade, screening and tropical effect trees. Crown lifting and fertilising after flowering is recommended as well as pruning to a single leader. Normally quite shallow rooted, so wind protection is necessary. Often grown in place of Jacaranda mimosifolia. Grafted cultivars, which ensure earlier flowering, are becoming more readily available. |
