Acer |
The Acer or Maple is a diverse range of deciduous trees and shrubs, from small weeping specimens, to trees up to 40 metres in the right conditions. Originally from cool temperate regions in the northern hemisphere, Acers prefer full sun or partial shade and will not do well in tropical conditions or dry heat. They need a rich well-drained soil and protection from wind.
Mainly grown and valued for their wonderful richly coloured and textured foliage, Acer leaves have better Autumn colour in cooler climates and A. palmatum 'Atropurpureum' and some of the A. palmatum Dissectum species have a rich variation of Spring colour too. Acer palmatum 'Sango Kaku” (syn.'Senkaki') has an iridescent red bark in the cooler climates, making a striking natural feature in a garden during winter. |
